Today’s Blog Post
Why Not Rent A Friend?
When I think back to 43 years ago, my wife is truly amazing! She is not like other women – at all.

She graduated from her nursing one day and the next we got married. Within two hours we were on an airplane to travel to Montreal first, then on to Trois Rivieres where we spent the first few months of our married life together.

From there we ended up in New Brunswick and the birth of our new baby girl in July 1968.

She came from her nurse’s residence experience and the busy hospital to her new home with me – 2,200 miles from her family… then even further to Fredericton, New Brunswick… and a large, old farm house in the country – to be alone.

We did not have a lot of friends… most friends were back in Saskatchewan not far from each of our families. No doubt it was lonely at first. When I travelled away from home on long road trips she found things to occupy herself, always keeping busy.

A long ways from anywhere and alone, yet we survived. I wonder how we did it – looking back now?

As time went on we made new friends in each place we lived. In fact we have collected friends from every corner of the earth at this point. What a joy!

My experience is in sharp contrast to the one that some folk have today. In fact today is so serious that many people never have any friends. They are completely alone – almost all the time.

What a perfect place and time to start up a business that is RentAfriend.com where you can possibly meet more than 200,000 new people – should you want to.

Their Web Site states the following…
“RentAFriend.com is the largest "Rent A Friend" website on the net with thousands of Friends from all over the US & Canada available for rent. Whether you are looking to hire a friendly companion to attend a social event or party with you, someone to introduce you to new people, or someone to go to movie or a restaurant with, RentAFriend.com can help.

Hire a Friend to show you around an unfamiliar town, teach you a new skill or hobby, or just someone for companionship.” End quote.

What a unique idea… pay some one to be your friend!

Leaving aside the possibilities that it may look like a escort service or something worse… it is strange that in this day and age we have so few friends – that we have to rent one!

I started mulling this over and wondered at the reason for a need to rent someone for one hour. Then what if I need more than an hour? $20 to $30 Bucks for two or three hours of someone’s time seems a bit extreme.

Why can’t I walk up to someone and introduce myself, tell them honestly that I don’t know anyone living here, or because of my weird working schedule I have not met anyone. Would you like to be a friend to me and just allow me some time to hang out together?

Oh I know the fear of rejection is bigger than the need for a friend. Someone scorning me or laughing at me would kill me – when I am fragile and uncertain of the new place I live in.

What has happened to our society?

What about church? Is that a good place to meet someone? Most times we see how good their hair looks from behind… and maybe even shake some one’s hand. But if you sit in the wrong pew in some churches you will only just be tolerated…

I have found that I have to make the first step each time. And I have found that it is not easy.
But it may not be any harder than paying $10 an hour to get a friend.

Come to think of it... the Web Site does make it possible to for me to register as a friend and maybe get paid the $10 an hour. I could do that!

Something to think about today…

Next time you are at a Tim Horton’s Coffee Shop (or another you may frequent…) introduce yourself to the person at the next table. Build a friendship. Could you do that? Would you do that?

The Beatles Rock group had one song that its lyrics asked, “All the lonely people… where do they all come from..?” That could be not be more relevant than it is today… as it describes so well what we live in.

I am convinced that any business and any community group could upset the world with friendship… simply being available when some needs to talk or be with someone else.
